Top 10 Autism Research Findings

At Ligno Academy our understanding of autism deepened and broadened, with scientific publications on an unprecedented number of advances and discoveries. They included the revelation of a previously unknown connection between the brain and the immune system and the reassuring results of the largest-ever comparison of autism rates among vaccinated versus unvaccinated children. Tantrums, Tears and Timeouts: Helping Your Child with ASD Overcome Challenging Behavior

Does your child scream if he can't wear his favorite shoes? Does he enjoy fondling material of certain textures without regard for where or on whom that fabric may be located? Does he fear the toilet, the market, the dentist? If so, take note he's trying to tell you how he feels and what he needs from you: We at Ligno Academy have learnt that children use behavior as communication.
Pay attention to cues what is your child trying to tell you. Parents and care providers have to be incredibly responsive and sensitive to children with autism regarding their behaviors, imparting a necessary vigilance and hyper-awareness on the part of the parent.
Parents need to become translators to children's behaviors.
As Ligno Academy educators we have highlighted the four most challenging autism behaviors and provide advice on how to best handle them.

Ligno Vitae Academy was nominated as a recipient of the Public Protector

Ligno Vitae Academy was nominated as a recipient of the Public Protector’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSI) initiative. The Academy received a donation of R 20000-00 on the 14th of January 2016 at a ceremony held on the school premises. The aim of the CSI initiative is to encourage positive actions and impact in the education sector, especially focusing on Autism.

Speaking at the ceremony, Public Protector Thuli Madonsela said she wasn’t just donating money, but also raising awareness about Autism. “We must raise awareness and tell people about Autism. A lot of children with Autism are sitting at home because parents aren’t aware of it. A lack of support and facilities are the key challenges we face when it comes to autism, especially in the black communities. “

Thuli Madonsela expressed her gratitude towards Ligno Vitae Academy for hosting the Autism Awareness event and for the support and contribution they make daily towards children with learning disabilities.

Stages of Autism Spectrum Diagnosis

The New Look of Autism

Children with autism used to be given one of four different diagnoses, but that's no longer the case. Autism includes a wide spectrum of symptoms, and each of these symptoms range in severity. The Ligno Academy guide can help you identify and understand your child's place on the autism spectrum.

There was a time in the not-so-distant past when children with autism were given one of four diagnoses based on criteria established some 20 years ago: autism, Asperger's, childhood disintegrative disorder, or pervasive development disorder not otherwise specified (PDD-NOS). But today, that's no longer the case. We've learned a lot about autism over the last couple of decades, including the fact that these disorders are all a form of autism. We at Ligno Academy follow all latest research to try and find the best way to help children with Autism Spectrum Disorder.
